In 1959, during the rectorship of Apollon Kutateladze, chairs of various fields of applied arts were formed, which in 1961, together with the previously existing department of ceramics, created the Faculty of Decorative and Applied Arts.</p>
The initiators of the opening of the faculty were: Rector of the Academy of Arts, Apollon Kutateladze and artist and teacher Davit Tsitsishvili.

The priority of the Faculty of Design is to develop students’ identities and interests in the field of design, based on both traditional and contemporary research, and to promote research-based practice.

Currently, teaching at the Faculty of Design is taking place at the undergraduate and graduate levels of higher education.
